Made me think about how different pokemon games would have been if the previous region was part of the post game. If it was done with GSC and again with HGSS then it is possible to continue and build upon that.
For regions that are not part of the same landmass like Johto and Kanto they could add a route in the new region where you initially start the game that would allow you to reach the previous region of the pokemon games. Half the journey in the initial region->take boat/plane->other half of the journey in the post game region.
Johto->Kanto
Hoenn->Johto
Sinnoh->Hoenn
Unova->Sinnoh
Kalos->Unova
Alola->Kalos
