It was widely despised until FRLG, Colosseum and Gale of Darkness, and Emerald softened the blow. And then the DS era pretty much buried the last of the negative emotions towards RSE
Me personally? I fucking hated gen 3 then and I hate gen 3 now. It's the single broken link in a chain that would otherwise stretch from 1996 to 2017, and on top of that it's just not a very good game, either. When I was a 10 year old and swallowed any media you put in front of him I outright dropped Sapphire, and gave Emerald a shot well into the DS era which made me love Pokemon again, and I beat it, but I still didn't like it.
