I used to really like Lilo and Stitch growing up and I loved Stitch The Movie + the animated series, and that inspired me to want to come up with a nickname for every pokemon. There were 629 experiments (even though they only ACTUALLY made less than 80 for the whole TV series) and I thought if Lilo could think of a name for each one, I could do the same for ~400 pokemon.
Sometimes I copied nicknames from the show, sometimes I named pokemon after anime characters I liked, sometimes I would just nickname pokemon after colors, gemstones, regular baby names, etc.
I did this up until around gen 5 where I started falling out of pokemon, and by gen 6 while I still gave some nicknames not every mon got one. Now I'm fine with not nicknaming pokemon at all unless I feel particularly attached to it.
I nicknamed two pokemon after my childhood cats when I was younger. I nicknamed my female Purugly Snowpuff and my male Persian Cuddly. They passed away a couple years ago, but they were mixed cats and they both were colored similar to pic.
I also had a blue parakeet that I named my male Chatot after, Arpeggio.
