There is a large region to explore inhabited by pokemon - monsters/animals with special powers. In this region there are people who train pokemon, and master trainers are able to head "gyms". There is a gym challenge wherein if you beat all of the gym leaders in the region, you can then challenge the pokemon league - an elite group of the region's fiercest trainers. You take on the role of one of these trainers and take on the gym challenge. Along the way you will encounter NPCs who can help you or will divulge parts of the lore, or you can choose not to.
