Also a character that's "human" but doesn't have a canon sex is shit because sex is part of the human self and designing your characters without their immutable characteristics in mind is the fastest way to make one dimensional tropes. It's also a good idea to try to race- and sex-swap your characters and see if they still make sense, then decide if your result is a good thing or not.
