Dragons classically have always been chimeric, though usually with a snake(serpent) as a base. Even then, the scales were often those of a fish, and they breathed poison, not fire.
Similarly, Asian dragons are described as being a mish-mash of animals; the head of a dog, eagle legs, fish scales, snake body, stag antlers, fish whiskers, mammal hair. To GF, and most of Asia, Dragons come in a ton of different forms.
This whole "quadrupedal lizard with two wings" stuff is very, very recent, like the 90's.
