Up until that point we had been running into tons of characters who strongly resembled characters from the mainline games but aside from their appearance they had nothing in common with their descendant. Which was cool because it underlined the idea that these were individuals with their own stories who just happen to be related to people we know from the future.
But then here comes this fag with a team and theme that were almost identical to his descendant's which undid all of that idea of these characters being their own people all for a cheap nudge-wink.
