Started out with 1 free Tangela from a kid on the bus and used that to trade all the way up to a massive binder of cards. Don't think I ever bought more than 1 booster pack. And I guess technically the Mew that came with buying a ticket to the movie.
Funny story. One kid at school had this card before the movie came out and was the coolest kid because of it. Wouldn't even let others hold it. Then they gave them out for free and crashed the market. The utter depression on his face the next day when 30 kids came in with copies of the card was priceless.
