I'm pretty sure all the people that ship or retain crushes on fictional characters do so because they got those feelings at a formative ages, and were around abouts the same age if not younger than the characters they attached to. And when looking at those static characters, our attached brains go back to the nostalgic time when we met them and had our experiences with them and formed those feels. A 30 something year old guy who's talking about a 15 year old girl from a 20+ year old anime was probably watching that cartoon before he hit puberty, and he's just remembering his first crush/unrequited love.
