They don't hide that he's filthy rich and has polished mannerisms, and they stepped away from the spelunking, indiana jones side the anime portrayed almost immediately.
I can definitely say Steven's always been popular though, because even back ~15 years ago I remember all my friends splooging over him when discussing husbandos.
