All of my team except for Heracross was in the 40’s, because I raised 10 main mons over the course of the game rather than just six to keep things challenging. If I had only raised six, my team would have all been in the 50’s or 60’s by the time I went to fight Red. Now, in all fairness, the traded Aerodactyl does get boosted exp, but I also had a Houndoom that I caught in Kanto on my endgame team as well. You absolutely can catch up wild caught mons to the rest of your team late in the game just by battling run of the mill NPC trainers. The only grinding against wild mons I did was in Mt. Silver to get Heracross up to level 54 to learn Megahorn before facing Red.
