It doesn't have to be exactly like real life. Pokemon that adhere to real life tend to be boring as shit, or have annoying quirks because of their "adherence to reality."

You could make a route 1 normal type that's still original by mixing and matching traits from different animals to make something fantastical. They just choose to be uncreative and boring by sticking to real life.
