It does well with a crowd for which I coined the term "casually competitive". Shit like Mario Sportsgames, Pokemon and Fortnite fall into the category, they are basically defined by the fact that it FEELS like they are at least mostly skillbased, but realistically a little bit of bad luck can cause the better player to lose. This not only gives you more wins to make you feel better about yourself, but if you lose you have a safety net of excuses to tell yourself.
In something like Chess or most fighting games that came out before recent you get your shit handed to you and you have to accept that your opponent made a fool of you. That's no fun to be on the receiving end of as the worse player, for most anyway.
TL;DR: People want the dopamine of winning at competitive, but they don't want to put in the work to actually get good.
