It's not like math where you memorize your times tables but don't understand why multiplying works. Pokemon has its own logic so you really are just memorizing the typings, not making sense of them, and all because GF was just trying (keyword, "trying", I know about Psychic being busted) to make a rock-paper-scissors game balanced on a bigger scale.
There's no actual logic as to why psychic beats poison or why flying beats grass. It's not like water beating electric has real-world comparisons with water conducting electricity. Many of the non-elemental typings have people making up their own reason in order to GIVE it logic and help them memorize it.
