Even if Alola's level design wasn't that great, I think you're all overrating the level design in previous games. It's not like previous games were devoid of areas that are just straight lines, or are just somewhat curved lines with small sections coming off, like Resolution Cave in Alola. Not to the mention the multiple dungeons that are just several floors of almost-circles you run around in until you reach the top/bottom floor. Most routes in Alola have things like branching paths that converge after a group of trees or some shit, just like many routes from previous games did to not feel as linear.
