I sort of had a series of defining moments that lead me to eventually playing the game and loving it to death.
>At school, 1st grade
>In line to go back to class from recess
>Im a shy kid, dont talk much
>New kid from a different class wanting to be friends is in front of me, starts talking with me and showing me his stuff
>Talks about this new "toy" he got
>Pulls out Dratini plush, the ones from KFC
>"Here, want this? Ive got an extra"
>I meekly take it, but really love it
I didnt really get a sense of what Pokemon was from that conversation alone, but later
>In class during a break
>Different friend comes up to me, asks if I heard about Pokemon
>Starts talking about what it is, the different cards, show, etc..
>Pulls out his favorite card, Pikachu
>Immediately entranced, something about the strange, foreign design captures me
>I tell my mom later
>She used to collect baseball cards as a kid, so she understand
>Surprises me later with a couple packs of cards
>Pull a bunch of stuff, but a random Far'Fetched sticks out to me
>ImHooked.jpeg
And then what REALLY sealed my love for the franchise, was that Christmas, when I got my first Gameboy and Pokemon Red. I hadn't been much into games at that point, but Red version had me absolutely addicted. I was a fan for life.
Bonus:
>Same class, our teacher was really cool
>She played on the Pokemania, had a day were we could bring our favorite Pokemon card to class and draw it on a big sheet of paper
>Everyone participated
>I was the "class artist", so a couple people had me help them draw
>Helped break my shyness, gave me a confidence boost, and made some friends
