I see where you're coming from with the Beedrill/Weedle thing but I'd say that reinforces it. Caterpie and Venomoth are vaguely similar, just like Weedle/Beedill. Both have a cocoon stage where they go through metamorphosis.
Venonat and Venomoth are ridiculously similar and, lacking a cocoon/transitionary stage, that would make sense. It basically just evolves, rather than going through metamorphosis
Fuck people that say Magikarp -> Dragonite and Dragonair -> Gyarados though
