I went on a trip when I was 7, and I wanted to try and catch a Pokémon while I was there. I was a bit nervous about going into the volcano when a Tepig came out, looked at me curiously, and walked right up to me. I didn't try to catch him then, since I wanted to make sure that the Pokémon I caught wanted to come with me; maybe he sensed my apprehension, because he seemed to try and get me to go into the cave with him. Through our exploration, I felt like I bonded with him; after we'd exited the cave, he still wanted to follow me, so I caught him then.
The region we went to was one where Poké Balls are somewhat frowned upon, but the locals don't seem to mind as long as Pokémon aren't kept in them. So, I kept Terry outside of his Poké Ball whenever possible; it's developed into a habit of tending to keep my whole team outside of their Balls.
