Magearna was just a worthless damsel in distress despite being very powerful in the games and card game, and I didn't understand what they were going for with Volcanion at all. Him just being a generic proud legendary with telepathic communication didn't fit with his underwater volcano theme at all, and his home being some random garden made it seem like he was placed into a completely generic role that didn't take his design or theme into account at all.
The main plot was pretty plain too. These two made a cute odd pair but that's about it.
