When DS was current, GBA games were still playable, but not GB/GBC games, therefore GS remakes arrived. This even somewhat supports more Gen1 remakes, but even I am not in favor of that just yet
Also, many Hoenn internal batteries have died, making some aspects stop working (berry growing, etc.) A move to 3DS would solve that issue as the games run on the 3/DS clock.
Hoenn wasn't my favorite region, but it was very good, and no one can deny that remakes would make both Gamefreak and Nintendo shitloads of money, which, as anyone with any sense should know, is the reason to keep the franchise going, period.
