One of Ash's most powerful pokemon (his Charizard) also rejected his first trainer after that trainer abandoned him and attempted to take him back again after seeing it get stronger. So even after being captured pokemon CAN leave their trainers. The act of working to capture a pokemon is something akin to a trainer having to prove he has the strength, resources, ability to capture them. Also read puc related.
