Probably boils down to the fact that I played USUM before SM but:
- great characters, aesthetics, pretty world
- great mons with intro of regional forms + ultra beasts
- immersive af world with a human story
- great post game
- boss mons
- full dex including megas
- quality of life improvements including breeding and competitive training
- best nuzlocke challenge
- overall feel; felt like a vacation

Despite the "hurr durr cutscenes are slow" complaint I really can't fault these games for much. If you all got USUM first you'd be heralding gen 7 as the GOAT I think
