Sonia has already instilled the notion of becoming a Pokemon Professor with her "homework" that he helped with. Seeing someone like Gary, who also was better at Battles than Ash for a while, might stir Goh enough to refine his goal and eventually refine his personality a bit more. If you think about the brotherly themes Gary was sort of that Older Brother who always made sure you knew he was better cause he was serious than the more childish sibling.
