Teens (and thus, former Pokemon kids who want to be cool like teens) now had the PS2 as the most-wanted source of video games as the new millennium rolled in. Nintendo's reputation was officially the Kiddie Table of the gaming world, and no kid actually wants to sit there.
Pokemania was doomed to crumble for circumstances outside of its control, and that's being swept up in the cultural discourse of consolewars, and it unfortunately was assigned to the most disadvantageous side.
