Okay worked out some more details, I think Ive gotten the comprehensive list of pokemon want in the game. Just over 100 species No legendaries yet.
the starters are Magby and Eleckid, you grab one and then the other Rocket Goon grabs the other. The one thats left over for the professors grandson to get is a Munchlax and he will be your rival though the game. The other thug will have his own plotline that I'm still trying to figure out.
