A regional variant Pokemon can have a different design, typing, stat distribution, movepool, evolution method, and now just plain new evolutions.
At this point what makes them different from just being considered a brand new Pokemon? It's just a way to rehash an older design. And this is purely on a gameplay level. Aesthetically, they're absolutely a mixed bag. Most of the regional variations feel way too divorced from the original designs or could pass as alternate evolutions, like Exeggutor. I feel like I'd like them a lot more if they were treated as less major changes, like just change the typing or ability.
