Wtf happened to theatre in Kalos? They used to be on top of the game with their refined and sophisticated productions, then when Unova got a Renaissance of theatre with the big musicals in Nimbasa, it seems like Kalos just gave up. Embarrassingly, now they're trying to eat the scraps off the success of Nimbasa's musicals.
Storytime. I was in Lumiose City to watch a show that was originally a smash hit back in Unova. You know, the one about the murder mystery on the Anville Express.
They managed to get the ok to recreate the musical to help out with their sales during a season of underwhelming Kalosian original productions.
People in Kalos already had high expectations after the hype from the original Nimbasa production and bootlegs that were circulating around, so this was Kalos' big chance to get back into the game.
Opening night, and it was a trainwreck. The show started about 45 minutes late cause the apparently the leading lady was having a diva meltdown to the point where when the show started, she kept fighting with her understudy to stay on stage after the understudy was told to take over.
The arrangement of the orchestra was so bad that the conductor had to have been drunk. A bunch of mistimed notes, accidentally playing over the actor's lines and rearranging the songs to the point where it felt like they were making it up as they go.
The actors needed so much better direction. Some forgot lines, didn't know their placements on stage and a lot of weird line read choices. Worse, they casted people who couldn't handle the songs. They had an hoity toity opera singer attempt to riff an upbeat jazz solo that was clearly written for someone who came from Unova.
The craziest part was that during a monologue, the Gumshoos partner of the detective was clearly having an off day and had some sort of beef with the detective because the whole time they were giving each other stank looks in what's supposed to be a heart warming exchange.
