SM will likely be remembered by many for its story, characters, and attempts to change the core series formula. But it wasn't much of a step forward, unless you really wanted Pokemon to be a more story driven experience. Gameplay-wise, it didn't add much of value at all. At best it was an experiment. New features like Z-Moves, Pokepelago or Ride Pokemon are already gone a Generation later. And this is where Generation 7 becomes problematic. More than any other Pokemon game, SM really exemplifies this design philosophy with Game Freak where they try make every new game now its own little theme park ride. Filled with Region specific gimmicks and ideas that'll never be seen again. Even if the gameplay suffers for it. XY and ORAS had a fantastic 2nd screen interface with tons of neat utility, but it was all thrown away for the Rotom Dex. PSS was universally praised for its online functionality, but it was replaced with the Festival Plaza. Friend Safari was a cool way to find HA Pokemon, but now you have to sit through chains of SOS Battles to even have a chance at them. And I could go on. There's so much reinventing of the fucking wheel in Gen 7, and the game is seriously worse off because of it. I can't help but imagine that this is going to get really bad for them in future games, since even the Pokedex isn't going to be a constant anymore. The one thing that remained throughout the Generations. I guess that's another thing that these games will be remembered for. The last place where you could catch 'em all, if nothing else...
