It's basically (one of?) the first major live text communication protocol. As such, it's actually pretty computationally low-cost. It has certain features and limitations (these are from a client perspective, not server admin):
>quickly change names with the /nick command>text only, so local logs take up basically no space due to no image hosting/embeds>no built-in logs - if you're not there, you can't see what happened (unless someone else shares their logs)>room topic messages, often used for announcements>no central client (I use Hexchat, myself), so if you hate the UI, you can change itIt's a (debatably) living relic from nerds of the 90s and early 00s, and it shows - it's open-source, clients are very customizable UI-wise, but it is *only* text (though I think the protocol supports Unicode now).
I occasionally hang out in the xkcd IRC rooms. It's cozy. I'm a dragon there, though, not a snake.
