Looking back I feel like I was a bit too old for Pokemania, but I still participated because it was legit fun. I made a lot of friends who were a year or two younger than me, and one who was 5 years older than me who was more or less my adult company, though said person's mom was with us most of the time.
Once I hit high school I made a pokefriend who plays with me even now, though she's a casual (Karen-fag who only beats the Elite Four) and I'm closer to mid-core (I catch'em all and enjoy breeding but don't do smogon/VGC). I actually have more friends who play Pokemon now who are all in our early-mid 30's than I had during the big craze. Almost all of us met in college and have been friends for the past decade. Embrace your hobbies. Having your own money and being out of school helps a lot, and we're all total nerds for additional reasons (anime/tabletop/PC/console shit).
