Gen 3 introduced side-activities, natures, abilities, secret bases, still the only Pokemon gen to run at 60FPS, double battles, which is the official battling style in tournaments, dynamic overworlds with weather, RUNNING SHOES, DIRE updates to the PC System, Mystery Gift, the first use of Wireless communication, tag battles, and the most recognized and most appraised post-game area in the series: The Battle Frontier. All of these mechanics and features have become regulars in the games now, and if it wasn't for 3rd gen, we wouldn't have experienced most of the stuff we have in 4th, 5th, and 6th gen. Combine all of this with Ruby and Sapphire and you have the beloved: Pokemon Emerald.
Platinum had most of the above, plus the actual introduction into online multiplayer and a dynamic story in-game. Not to forget the physical/special split
There are literally no games that have beaten what Platinum and Emerald have accomplished. If X&Y had everything Emerald had, everything Platinum had, and all the stuff it has now, GameFreak could've created the best Pokemon game ever, hands down, if not the best handheld game ever.
