I was here in pokemon ruby. north of Mr. Briney's house in the little patch of grass next to the loamy soil. I had long beaten the game and was trying to complete the national pokedex (This was back when I only owned ruby and didnt know you had to have all the gamez for winrar pokedex). Suddenly a PURPLE wurmple appeared. I was stunned, and I assumed it was the wurmple you needed to get cascoon instead of silcoon. I had a level 56+ swampert and 5 eggs in my party. swampert has surf, waterfall, dive, and muddy water. There was nothing I could do to improve my catch chances. I went for the pokeball pocket in my bag to find an empty space where my balls should have been. I had not 1 single pokeball to catch this pokemon variant i had never seen before in my whole life. I didn't have the internet to consult, nor did I have a guide book that even hinted that shiny pokemon were a thing that existed. Ruby was my first game so I haden't had the experience of the red gyarados. I didn't want to kill the purple wurmple so I had no choice but to run away. I ran east past my dad's gym to the blue pokemart. I was kicking myself for running out of pokeballs. I spent literally all my remaining cash on plain pokeballs. I ran back to the same patch of grass to encounter a poochyena. I was crushed. There was one tile of grass south of me. I was dejected and started back towards the pokemon center to heal swampert and save the game. I took the step south into the next grass tile only to get ticked that I immediately had another encounter right away. At least, I was until, to my utter disbelief i see a purple wurmple. PURPLE. WURMPLE. I threw a ball and caught it first try. I was speechless.
Even today I had no idea how this was a possible occurrence.
That wurmple went on to evolve into silcoon, which was confusing, and finally into Beautifly. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. And I will never forget this memory.
