This is my proposed starter choice.
My favorite line is Sandshrew/Sandslash, so I needed starters who were balanced with him. Both have similar stat totals (275/288/300 in their first forms and 450/448/450 in their second), only a single evolution, and pure typing.
As a further benefit, the Grass-Poison-Ground type triangle is the most perfect type triangle outside the starter triangle. The only flaw is that Ground doesn't resist itself.
