Updated graphics and cosmetics. minor gimmick areas, etc, aren't enough. Then when you have watered-down mechanics making it too casualized even to a non-competitive player, limiting to 152 pokemon, etc, you know there's something very wrong.
It's only good for either kids 6 and under, and possibly someone who never played pokemon before and perhaps feels intimidated by difficult or whatever. FRLG is literally the better choice for anyone else.
The fact they're advertising this game as "a pokemon game for everyone" and Masuda constantly buries himself, contradicts, and makes shit up in interviews makes the whole thing a joke. Have you seen all the negativity on the youtube videos? I'd be surprised if the game actually bombs horribly, but it's definitely not going to do what they were expecting.
