I think what people hate most about Gen 8 is how Game Freak had no excuse for putting out a game that looked like Gen 7 on a home console
>In 2003, [Shigeru Miyamoto] described his "fundamental dislike" of the role-playing game (RPG) genre: "I think that with an RPG you are completely bound hand and foot, and can't move. But gradually you become able to move your hands and legs... you become slightly untied. And in the end, you feel powerful. So what you get out of an RPG is a feeling of happiness. But I don't think they're something that's fundamentally fun to play. With a game like that, anyone can become really good at it. With Mario though, if you're not good at it, you may never get good."
People expect RPGs to look better than platformers.
Non-random overworld encounters, good battle animations, action commands, pleasant ground textures, diverse scenery models, worlds large enough to explore for a long time, repeatable content which never feels stale, more than one main battle theme. These are things that other RPGs have already done. Meanwhile, Pokemon feels more like a Hydlide or a Milon's Secret Castle or a MSX or PC 8801 game like Wizardry, Dragon Quest, or Ultima but without the difficulty or charm or mystery
People have salivated over "What if they moved Pokemon to home consoles" since the early 2000's.
Colosseum and XD don't count because they were outsourced and really part of the Stadium series.
Masuda has said that there will never be another Stadium game.
