I got back into it during XY, and those games were a little disappointing but overall fun.
It didn't dawn on me that it was getting bad until people found all that cut content in SUMO's code and the additions to USUM when it was released were mostly those pieces of content.
People can argue that, graphically, Pokemon has never been the most high-tech; so when SWSH was revealed, I just assumed it would look average but be a lot of fun. Then, Dexxit happened and when I realized their reasoning for it didn't add up with the content we were seeing, I didn't even consider buying it. I know I would have had some fun with it, but I didn't want to support Game Freak for making a below subpar game while lying about it. I know my one sale doesn't effect anything, but it feels good knowing I didn't waste my money supporting something I didn't agree with.
While the anime has been hit or miss, the franchise as a whole is doing fine in my eyes. It's only the main game series that are suffering; but despite that, I have faith the games will eventually get better. Probably not the next release, but eventually they'll either put more effort in for one reason or another or the people in charge willing to make a lesser game will have to leave or retire, at some point.
Hold out hope, even if you don't buy the newer games, it can still get better.
And at least the other aspects of the franchise can keep most people interested and give them an enjoyable time.
