Did you just conveniently miss the part where she realizes what she did wrong and why Excadrill no longer wanted to play with her, which is basically her whole theme not only in the anime, but also the games?
As for Dragonite it's literally the same shit. Since you need to be spoonfed, it's "listening the heart of pokemon". Hell, it got hammered over your head multiple times with it disobeying her afterwards until she battled in a way he wanted her to.
Frankly, it's baffling that you somehow find "Serena, May and Dawn" well written yet have trouble following the such basic concept written above. Maybe the writters really are right in treating their audience like morons, as anything that isn't hammered over your head is completely ignored it seems.
