I mean, you all say you're going to become "the very best" that you're going to defeat the evil team, catch Pokemon, catch the cover legendary, and do EVERYTHING else in-between.
But let's face it.
Realistically speaking, and nostalgia goggles aside, a lot of us wouldn't make it very far judging by how harsh a journey around the region is. Brendan/May giving up without even evolving their starter in order to pursue something is realistic, something that you wouldn't expect to happen in the super-fantasmal world of Pokemon, but something that you would in our world.
It's just a subtle lesson, not everyone is a "chosen one".
