Well, I've always made this comparison when explaining competitive Pokemon to friends, but so does any turn based strategy can be compared to Chess. Ofcourse it's just a comparison and a rather vague one for reason already mentioned here, like the players not having the exact same team every time (although they have the exact same pool to pick from) and the moves are performed simultaneously and not one after another, but I think it is still a correct comparison to make.
