In FireRed I got stuck in the E4 so I used GameShark to auto-win every battle. After I beat the game and completed those boring Sevii Islands quests I put in some cheats to change the wild encounters and also made it so I'd be able to catch other trainer's Pokemon. (Sorry but I wanted to catch em all. You can't do that when GF only gives you a handful of Johto mons to encounter.)
Anyways, those cheats didn't actually do anything, but I kept putting the cheats back in in hopes that it'd work eventually. Nothing. But I noticed weird things happening to my game, like my mons getting turned into bad eggs and encountering giant question marks. It only happened on occasion at first but eventually my entire box reverted into bad eggs and the only thing I encountered was giant question marks. I tried to start a new game but it wouldn't let me save over my old file.
Years go by and I learned about MissingNo, and what happened to me was essentially the gen 3 equivalent of causing the MissingNo glitch. I never used a cheat device on a Pokemon game ever again.
