I like that starting in SM, they started giving the co-protagonists full sets of parents, or in the rare cases where they didn't (Mallow), they explained why they didn't have them and made that part of their background. Maybe it's just because I've gotten older and have had to deal with my parents aging, but I have gotten annoyed more often recently with the inexplicable absentee parent trope. May's arc feels so much more fulfilling with both parents and a brother to flesh out her character. I'll give the anime credit for explaining that Ash's dad is a deadbeat and Brock's parents are retards and deadbeats; they could've done more with Dawn, Iris and Serena.
Full credit to the HZ staff. They could've made Roy another Future Boy Conan and left his parents twisting in the wind, but they pulled through with a really heartwarming backstory. Now show us Dot's dad and I'll be happy.
