>>47642225The most straightforward way of doing this is to force you to give up an item if you want 2 abilities.
People seemed to like own my idea from ages ago about how 2 Ability slots could work, so I'll paraphrase
>axe the hidden abilities concept–HAs become part of the normal ability pool>abilities now come in 2 types (never could decide on a name....for now i'll call them major and minor)>a major ability is something all pokemon of that species all have, always. it is innate and unchangeable>a minor ability is something you can only unlock through many battles and training. each species has 1-3 to choose from>major and minor abilities are simultaneous, so you have 2 at once>this is balanced by major abilities always being the same for the whole species, so you balance the monster around its major ability (you won't be given the choice of 2 broken abilities by design)>9/10 times the major ability is going to be something heavily associated with that pokemon, or pivotal to how it functions—major is their "most iconic" ability basicallyExamples
>when you think of milotic you immediately think of marvel scale, so that is its major ability>dugtrio has arena trap as a major, but is given weak minor abilities like sand veil to balance this>slaking has truant as a major, but now it actually has ability options to choose from in its minors>all mons with levitate have that as their major, leaving them free to have minor abilities>overtly strong pokemon like garchomp are given useless major abilities by design, so they still only have one good ability. but weak shitmons are given strong major abilities, so they can have an edge by having 2 good abilities at once>many mons that are forced to have 1 ability because of their concept have options now, like minior>castform has forecast as its major and the 3 weather setters as its minors, so a fully trained castform will transform immediately>eevee family all share adaptability as their major
