>>54757993I gave my protagonist a steel type pokemon specifically so he'd have something in common with Jasmine, so he'd have a reason to go and talk to her. An icebreaker I guess, although the story didn't end up needing that. I wanted it to be something unevolved, ideally the first of a three-stage line, so the main character feels like an underdog and has room to grow. I didn't want it to be Magnemite since having the same pokemon as Jasmine felt kind of weird. S/V weren't out yet so Tinkatink and Pawniard weren't an option. Honedge and Klink feel a little too like inanimate objects and I kinda forgot they existed. That left either Aron or Beldum. I don't really remember why I picked Beldum over Aron, I think I just liked that it was the stronger 'mon upon evolving, even though it never gets to its final form in the story. This choice ended up informing other parts of the protagonist's backstory, like being from Hoenn originally. It also let me write Jasmine squee'ing over how cute she thinks Metang is, which I just find hilarious. It would be less funny if she thought Aron was cute because that thing actually is kind of conventionally cute.
