They should just go back to making regions that are vaguely Japanese like the first four gens. Their fixation on other places and cultures has steered them into going for a style over substance approach, ie focusing more on the presentation and staying true to their inspiration, and not on making region that's actually well designed.
While the regions of Gens 1-4 were based on actual regions in Japan, their influences weren't as much in the spotlight as it is now with the more recent titles.
