I was ten when I got Red version. The mania has receded, but never disappeared.
The most interesting thing about the early days, and this is probably kind of weird to think about for the younger fans, is that the internet wasn't omnipresent like it is today. My family didn't even own a computer until I was in my teens. I couldn't casually look up a walkthrough or have all the secrets revealed in a list. There was stuff we genuinely didn't know or understand about these games, with no easy way to find out. I have memories of sitting with a friend and trading different monsters back and forth, trying to figure out if anything else would evolve like Kadabra and Haunter did. Mew under the truck is a joke now, but it was a very real possibility to us back then. And oh my lord, Pikablu. Or Mewthree.
You guys have no idea. Rumors back then were insane. Anything was possible.
