Gen 6 was great but still got due criticism under the expectation that future games would get better. People were more upset when Gen 7 took 5 steps backwards but were willing to overlook it since it at least tried to do something different.
Gen 8 was supposed to be a return to form and improvement of Gen 6, yet it ended up somehow even worse than Gen 7. Of course there was a massive outbreak of hate as soon as they announced they wouldn't be doing the bare minimum but would still charge you two separate subscriptions for it.
