Emerald May isn't generic, I don't see what you're getting at there. I don't see girls dressing like that, it's a very cool tomboy look and her limbs aren't noodles. They didn't need to copy, but at least draw more inspiration from that version. Maybe that's just a matter of taste, I don't generally like girly girls.
And layers aren't that bad if it's just the pants, I live in Florida and never wear anything besides cargo pants. Hoenn might be considerably more temperate.
