Well, outside the usually stuff like power tripping, poorly though out world building, Mary/Marty stu, force romances there a couple things that will make me drop a fic. An empty feeling world, being dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy, MC is so much smarted and better then everyone else or "discovers" something that no one else in setting has (I'm looking at you BOC), forgetting that Pokemon are characters too, when a characters dose something inexcusable stupid, insert of "Current Year Politics" or your average Isekai Male Protagonists.

It could also tell the reader what kind of person they are like say a reckless will go all in, someone more timid/scared will turtle up, strategist freezing up due to paralysis through analysis, a deeply caring person calling off a fight or not using too damaging moves, a Narcissist making the battle about them, a sociopath can be show putting their Pokemon in harm way in order to win, a determined trainer can ever give up no matter what happens or a someone naturally skilled may come up with different strategies on the file, etc.
