Basically, you want a really strong starter, plus 2-3 good daycare mons.
The idea is to start with something cracked like a Swords Dance Garchomp so that you can sweep gyms 1-5 and save all the extra money you would've spent on teaching moves to shitmons. Also in this time you should be comfortably breezing through routes and catching good Pokemon and not have to worry about them pulling their weight yet. Plus they'll be accumulating EVs the earlier you get them.

When you beat a trainer, you get an even distribution of EVs. HOWEVER, if you have a boosting nature, EVs won't go into your negative stat and instead flow into your boosted stat. This really adds up so MAKE SURE your starter has a good nature from the start of the run. Mints are dirt cheap in the hub. My Jolly Annihilape starter (90 base speed) was regularly outspeeding 120 base speed mons at the endgame because of the accumulated speed EVs, don't take it lightly.

Once you're at Gym 6+ you should have enough cash to deck out your decent team.

Also, this game rewards setup sweepers. If you can get a Pokemon that's bulky enough to set up SD/DD/Bulk Up/Calm Mind and heal it back with potions, it'll likely be able to sweep while the rest of your team stays safe. Watch out for Focus Sash and priority moves especially if you have a 4x weakness though.

Prioritize berry upgrades. Do the team boss quest to unlock Sitrus, you can carry 999 of them into runs so you can reserve stronger potions for during battle.

(original region is nice but most of those games are never finished and in demo hell)

yep, i know i'm going to be eating good. if you don't like it stick to mainline, these rom hacks are built for me
