My two cents is that Mawile is Fairy because its entire shtick is that it pretends to be sweet and cute as a form of deception to hunt prey. Mawile is cute and petite and affectionate, even, and aaawwwww doesn't it just melt your heart? It has all those qualities Fairy Types often have, but it's USING that charm and veil of innocence for insidious purposes.
A fairy appearing sugary on the surface while having a startlingly malicious side underneath is not at all an unusual or new concept. Mawile is also based on a specifically female Japanese myth and is feminine in general, further supporting Fairy.
The Japanese name is worth considering too.\, it's called Kucheat. It's definitely from kuchi meaning mouth and eat. But it's also probably from cheat and cute. The whole point is that it looks innocent and vulnerable but isn't, that's why it's Fairy.
